1967 AAR Eagle-Weslake T1G; Dan Gurney, Brands Hatch Race of Champions winner. (1:18)
Before the advent of the modern era where drivers from all motorsports disciplines competed in specialized stadium-prepared vehicles, the original Race of Champions was a non-championship Formula One race that was held at Brands Hatch in Kent, United Kingdom between 1965 and 1979, and then again in 1983.

This race often attracted high quality entries from the Formula One World Championship and in 1967 a veritable who’s who of drivers participated in the three-heat racing event. Notable entries included, Richie Ginther in the second Eagle, John Surtees in a Honda, Lorenzo Bandini, Ludovico Scarfiotti, and Chris Amon in Ferraris, Jack Brabham and Denny Hulme in Repco-Brabhams, Mike Spence in a BRM H-16, Jo Siffert, Pedro Rodriguez in Cooper-Maseratis, Bruce McLaren in a McLaren/BRM, plus Jackie Ickx and Jean-Pierre Beltoise in F2 Matra-Cosworths.

Although the All American Racers (AAR) Eagle Formula 1 car had debuted in 1966 with a Climax engine, 1967 marked the first time the car was paired with the 490 HP 3.0 liter V12 Weslake engine.

At the non-Championship 1967 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch the All American Racers scored their first success with Dan Gurney scoring a win and teammate, Richie Ginther following closely behind until brake failure forced him to retire.

Things turned sour again during the next few races with the engine being the main culprit. Fortunately though the car and engine held together long enough to complete Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francochamps and for Dan Gurney to claim the much desired Grand Prix win for an American car for the first time after Jimmy Murphy and Duesenberg's win in the 1921 French Grand Prix, and the first for an American Driver in a car of his own make.

Things looked to be going well at the even more legendary, Nurburgring track, but after setting lap record after lap record and leading by 45 seconds and with less than one lap to go a failed CV joint caused Gurney retire from the lead and potentially a second points scorning victory for the Eagle T1G.
