The 2005 24 Hours of Le Mans was noted for it’s unusually warm weather, with temperatures approaching 90°F. The high air temperatures resulted in a number of mechanical failures as well as several race incidents.
In the GT2 class the Alex Job Racing, Porsche 996 GT3 RSR had set the pace for the class with a lap of 4:05.326 and by the end of the first hour or racing driver, Mike Rockenfeller, had managed to secure the GT2 class lead with a significant margin. However in the following hours the Petersen-White Lightening Porsche 996 GT3 RSR charged into the lead and was engaged in a classic Le Mans Sarthe battle for the class lead.
After swapping for the lead a few more times during the first 12 hours, the Alex Job Racing team, with drivers, Mike Rockenfeller, Marc Lieb and Leo Hindery moved into the lead and held steady for the next twelve hours, emerging victorious in the GT2 category of the 24 hour classic with a 1-lap margin as well as recording the fastest lap for the class with a lap of 4:07.164.
